After a particularly damp winter patio metal furniture can start showing signs of rust. Rust is a general term used for the oxidation of iron or metal. It is formed through a reaction of metal in the presence of water and air, mainly oxygen. Prolonged rust can cause permanent damage to wrought iron furniture and outdoor cast furniture, cause it to weaken and disintegrate.

Cleaning rust, or rather removing it is a daunting task to many, and not surprisingly since most people don't realise that rust is easy enough to remove with everyday household items that can usually be found around any kitchen. This includes everyday white vinegar, or lemons for smaller areas, or rubbing oils, wire wool and some time on your hands. Baking soda is another everyday household item you can use to remove rust.

Rust is the term which is described as the oxidation of metal. It is formed when iron is exposed to water and air. In order to protect this type of furniture from permanent damage, it needs to be kept away from rusting. Some preventive measures to save wrought iron furniture from rust are:

• Affected areas of furniture treated with plain white vinegar or rubbing oil gives effective results. It removes rust quickly. This method is effective for removal of rust on small areas of the furniture. It should be kept in mind that furniture is left soaking in the oil or vinegar to loose the rust properly. This helps in easy cleaning and takes less time as well.

• Rusty areas treated with lemon juice also help a lot. Lemon performs the same way as vinegar does.

• Another useful tip is the use of baking powder over small rusty areas. But, baking powder should be mixed with enough amount of water to stick well. And the rusty part is left with paste for enough time.

• Use wire wool against rusted area and scrub with wire wool harder to get effective results. Scrubbing followed by little bit applying of oil also works in great manner. Vinegar loose down the rust and rubbing process removes it.

• If the rust on wrought iron furniture is too hard, then sand paper can be used in this case. Sandpaper offers best solution for removing stubborn rust on furniture.
